Janet Pane-Joyce's goal as a potter is to create pieces that surprise and amuse. Based on Virginia's Eastern Shore, she incorporates local natural elements such as horseshoe crabs and gum tree leaves into her wheel-thrown ceramics.
Selected works now available at The Red Queen Gallery, 57 Market Street, Onancock, VA.
Janet’s pieces range in size from tiny 1” pots and 3” boxes...
… to tall 15" decorative vases, 14’’ round wall pieces, and large lidded jars.
She works in a variety of distinctive styles:
leaf silhouette style: The patterns are made using real leaves from local plants such as morning glories, ferns, and cardinal creepers. Because the leaves are used up in the process, each piece is truly unique.
local sea life style: Janet casts molds from shells and crabs found on the Eastern Shore to create pieces authentic to the area.
wandering path style: The wandering path design symbolizes how life’s path is seldom straight, taking unique twists and turns along the way. Each “path” is cut from paper that is used up in the process, so no two are exactly alike – just like in life.
Her 6-inch wave-top boxes evoke the patterns left by waves on the sand.
She also enjoys crafting pieces featuring imaginary birds, never seen on the Eastern Shore or anywhere else.
